My wife & I recently spent a 1-week honeymoon (July 14--21, 2010) on the beautiful island of St Martin.
As much as this is a most-popular destination, I don't believe enough travel agents have sufficient information to help travelers get here. That's a shame.
My comments:
A week is not enough time to spend here. There are too many beaches, and too many restaurants, to get to "the best" in a week.
The beaches are everything one would want. Soft sand, beautiful blue-green water, amazing shorelines, views to die for. You can find gentle waves or crashing surf. The cliffs at Cupecoy are amazing; they'll make any amateur photographer seem like a seasoned professional. The opportunity to skinny-dip & get an all-over tan should be enjoyed. Don't miss the many beach bars -- especially on Orient Beach. Stay for lunch, and maybe even dinner.
I can't even begin to start about the restaurants. To start, I must mention Sarafina's Bakery in Marigot. Yes, it's not really a restaurant, but the French pastries here are fantastic. Learn a few words of French before you get here, it'll help.
There is so much to do, so much to see, and so much to enjoy. This island is paradise.

Yes.
In spite of the facts:
The roads suck. Driving is a challenge; and parking even moreso.
Food is pricy here. Restaurant or grocery market, it's gonna hurt.
Hotels are expensive.
Electricity will go out -- at least once -- during your stay.
Don't drink the tap water. Use bottled water to make coffee & tea.
The "cuban" cigars are not.
So what.
This island is worth those few hassles.
